Sleep Talkers I Have Known and Loved
My sister was a big sleep talker. Growing up we shared a room, in fact we slept in bunk beds until I was around 14. Most of what she said was
incomprehensible. Something along the lines of, "We have to go ferfer hefuh shmmm...." Often she would just yell "stop it!"
One night I was about to fall asleep when she said, "will you pass me the chocolate?" "what?" I said. Her voice had that sleepy slurring that made me sure that she was asleep. "Give me the chocolate," she said again.
"You're talking in your sleep."
"No, I need the chocolate."
"I don't have any chocolate."
"give me the chocolate."
So I passed her a box of Kleenex.
She said "thanks" and stopped talking. The next morning she didn't remember a thing.
My boyfriend also talks in his sleep and he says that I do too. A couple of weeks ago I was laying in bed lamenting my job and all the stress I was feeling. He was trying to go to sleep. Finally I shut up and he dozed off and then all of a sudden he blurted out, "you shouldn't do anything you don't love."
I haven't remembered any of my dreams for a while so I've been trying to get myself to remember. This is the first step in a project which will culiminate, I hope, with lucid dreaming. Do you know what lucid dreaming is? It's when you realize you are dreaming while still in the dream. I've had one lucid dream in my entire life. It was back when I was in middle school and I was doing a project on dreams and dreaming. I dreamt that I was at school and then realized that it was a dream. So I headed for the door and flew away.
I've always hated it when people told me their dreams. Why is it that other people's dreams are so boring? It's unlikely that I will post any of my dreams here, so don't worry.
Waking Life
This new fixation on dreams is related to the fact that I finally saw Waking Life. That was an amazing movie...if you haven't seen it yet go rent it, it's out on DVD. The movie is set in a dream. Basically the whole film was shot in low-quality digital video and then a team of animators animated over the video. The results is a movie that wiggles like cells dividing in a microsocope, yes, cells dividing and discussing philosophy at the same time. Gravity is generally optional, and when gravity takes a break haunting Tango music picks up the slack. This article by Wiley Wiggins is interesting. He plays the main character in the movie and also tried animating some portions of the movie.
