[10 photos in a vineyard]

|

I spent Saturday helping out at a vineyard. Migratory robins start heading north this time of year at the same time the grapes get ripe. It's a clever synchronization brought on by evolution. To keep the birds out we covered the vines with nets. Big, long nets we rolled off of the tractor and clipped on to the vine trellises with orange, plastic clips. Someone told me that another local vineyard charges people 50 dollars each for the privilege of working on the grape vines for a day. They call it "wine camp". It was fun, but 50 dollars worth of fun? I don't think so.

There were also cows. Three cows mooing, begging for apples, and eyeing us suspiciously. The beeping sound of my digital camera freaked them out. They had long, slimy tongues and soft, feathery eyelashes.

Wine grapes are not sweet. Do not eat them. Blackberries are heaven this time of year. Eat those instead.

Once we were done we headed over to the patio. We sat under the trees in a circle to keep the baby in and the dogs out and drank wine from 98, 99, and 2000. We also ate potato chips. It was great.
