You're supposed to stand on the right and walk on the left on the escalators in the Underground. People adhere to this rule religiously. Even during rush hour when you have to wait in a big crowd just to get on the escalator, people obediently shift over to the right leaving an unobstructed pathway all the way up the left side.
People don't talk on the subway. There are exceptions to this rule. American tourists of a certain kind (the stereotypical kind) talk very loudly on the Underground. Drunk people talk on the Underground. Insane people talk on the Underground. If you strike up a conversation with a stranger on the Underground they will assume you fall into one of these categories.
Also, people don't make eye contact on the Underground. If I don't have something to read I take some time to examine the shoes people are wearing around me. Shoes are a safe zone, you can't offend or annoy someone if you are staring at their shoes.
