A lot of books were left behind in my apartment, some sci fi novels and a lot of chick lit, a genre I have never delved into before. I'll do anything to avoid reading social theory for my exams. The result is that I have read the following:

  • Good in Bed - Cannie, an ambitious writer gets pregnant by her former boyfriend, befriends a famous actress, sells her screenplay, and then it all turns weird and stupid. The ex's new girlfriend pushes Cannie causing her to give birth prematurely, then the former boyfriend is fired and Cannie takes his job. Whu?
  • Elegant - this book is so dull...the heroine gets divorced, tries to get stylish, befriends some uptight British girls, and at the very end meets a nice pianist.
  • Can you keep a secret? - the heroine of this book is a bumbling idiot with no discernible talents or personality. I hate those kinds of plots where a womans worth is defined by the fact that she manages (inexplicably) to land a talented and accomplished man (in this case the CEO of her company). In fact, most chick lit I've read so far is about women upgrading from one man to a more successful one. The heroine of this book spends a lot of time lamenting her mediocrity. I say, stop complaining, get off your ass and do something interesting with your life. Another theme in this book is 'ambitious women' = 'evil'.
  • Bookends - a repressed woman quits her job opens a bookstore and shuns old friends instead of confronting them about something she thinks they are doing (which they aren't). I liked the opening a bookstore theme. I also liked the description of her love interests cool apartment with a glass ceiling.
  • Man and Boy - there are no likeable or sympathetic characters in this book, not even the 4 year old boy.
studying for exams = procrastination = reading a lot of chick lit
